SUNY has set the goal that every undergraduate student will participate in a high-quality internship or other experiential learning opportunity that prepares them for their future before graduation. At the New York State College of Ceramics, students can participate in paid internships and research through the Summer Ceramic Internship Program and Engineering Summer Research Program.

Alfred University held its first-ever commencement dedicated to graduate degree recipients on Friday evening, May 15. The university conferred 128 master’s degrees and four doctoral degrees at a ceremony held in Miller Theater. The ceremony also recognized graduates who earned master’s degrees (51) and doctoral degrees (six) in August and December 2025 and January 2026.

The U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announces that two Alfred University students have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for the 2026-2027 academic year. Michelle Seo, who earned an M.F.A. from Alfred in 2025, will be going to South Korea to pursue an independent research project. Lily Janik, a senior at Alfred who will graduate May 16, was awarded an English teaching assistant grant in Taiwan.

During a recent weekend in Alfred University’s spring semester, first-year student Hana Tadessa found herself in the crypt of the Mount Saviour Monastery, in Pine City, NY, listening to the monastery’s resident Benedictine monks chanting the early morning prayers of Vigils. A statue of the Virgin Mary was a centerpiece of the room, and Hana felt a combination of peacefulness and weirdness.

Alfred University has been awarded an extension on a joint project with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to study the synthesis and characterization of ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) materials. The university will receive $3.2 million in funding—part of a $13.5 million contract initially awarded in the spring of 2022.

Kiani Barnard-Pratt came to Alfred University as a biomaterials engineering major, with an interest in pursuing a career in the development of prosthetics. Now a senior, she is working on a research project focused on 3-D printing of glass-based materials that can be used for tissue, organ, and bone regeneration.

Growing up in Olean, Lily Schena had never experienced the fun of ocean snorkeling. That changed over Alfred University’s winter break, when Lily and nine other students enrolled in the Environmental Studies course Ecology of the Bahamas and traveled to the Bahamas with Environmental Studies Professor Fred Beaudry, Environmental Studies Technician Nicole Munkwitz, and Assistant Professor of Geology Michaela Fendrock.

Sixteen Alfred University undergraduates traveled to Germany over the recent Allen Term break, either as students in the class Looting Europe: How Hitler Stole the Continent's Art class, led by Associate Professor of History Andrew Kless, or German Auto Industry, led by Dean of the College of Business Mark Lewis. Additionally, ten Chinese students from the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan also joined the trip this year, led by doctoral candidate Nuerxiati Juleiti.

Ayomideji “Deji” Israel-Akinbo, a junior from Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa, has been named Alfred University’s first-ever All-American in rugby. National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) released its 2025 All-American teams on Feb. 5 and Israel-Akinbo was one of just 23 players nationwide named to the Division III squad.

Students in Alfred University’s education program are required to complete two or more teacher certification exams— taken during their senior year or after graduation—in order to become certified to teach in New York State. The requirement is in addition to completion of three state workshops and the conferral of their degree. According to the state Education Department’s most recent report, from 2024, 98 percent of Alfred students passed their licensing exams.
